Notes for 10/23 Class
Hey class!
I've received some questions since our class and wanted to make sure I clarified things here in case others had the same questions also.
Cuckoo's Nest Essay
This assignment is posted on the website. I renamed it and the file so it's easier to find. The "Essay Questions" file lists all three essay assignments in one place. You have them in advance of the due dates so you can get a head start on them if you need to. The rubrics for each assignment are listed below the questions file, but again, you're only responsible for Cuckoo's Nest for Monday.
Each submission should be two pages (more than 1.75 pages, less than 2.5 pages), single-spaced. I've attached a template for y'all to follow in terms of your heading and text (typical MLA). This essay is a critical analysis of a scene of your choice from Cuckoo's Nest, whether you watch the film or read the script. Follow the question guide (also attached and found on the website as mentioned earlier) and be detailed in your explanation of why for each part of the question. You do not need a works cited page because you really should only be drawing on the film/script. And unlike the coverage assignment, there's no extra credit opportunity on this assignment.
Think of Professor Thompson's lectures, especially about conflict and desire. Then try to tackle a scene from Cuckoo's Nest using that frame of reference.
Group #1 Ideas
A reminder for members of Group #1 to bring in ONE IDEA that you are excited to explore for Script 2. Fifteen pages max; No location/character restrictions. But the high expectations are still in place. The more developed or outlined the idea is, the better. Come class on Monday, we'll be breaking up into small groups to workshop Group #1's ideas. We'll focus on the concepts we've learned in class so we can help make the idea as strong as possible before the writers go to workshop pages.
Reading Assignment
As we move into Script 2, I wanted to give you all a more focused reading assignment that focuses on the main points I think we as class would benefit from some additional clarification. It's just about 15 pages total, so nothing crazy. But at the very least, I'd like you to read one section you think you're struggling with the most based on workshops and feedback. Then bring one quote that stood out to you (that clarified or confused you even more) to share with the class on Monday. Cowgill:
Deeper Meaning (pp. 22-24)
Five Questions That Won't Go Away (pp. 29-32)
Order of Set-Up thru Crisis (pp. 71-76)
Climax & Resolution (pp. 140-145)
Mid-term Class Evaluations
I've attached the Word .doc file of the Mid-term Class Evals I handed out on Monday in case anyone wanted to type up their responses and hand in on Monday. Again, this is anonymous, and I appreciate everyone's honest feedback. If there's anything additional you'd like me to know beyond the questions listed, feel free to write/type more and staple it together with the eval.
As always, if anyone has questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask.
Best,
Rebecca
